ALBAQUA (Combined ALgal and BActerial waste water treatment for high environmental QUAlity effluents) is an ERA-NET CORNET project funded by national agencies members of the CORNET Network. In this project, the potential of algae for the paper industry and related industrial sectors will be investigated. The aim is to establish suitable concepts for this purpose and determine their cost-efficiency potential. The results of the project may lead to a paradigm shift regarding effluent treatment in paper industry as well as in related industrial sectors in case effluent treatment by means of algae proofed successful. Entire industrial sectors would shift service and technology portfolio in respect to the new concepts for biological effluent treatment and reuse of excess biomass. The project is in accordance with the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) that aims to achieve sustainable water use, sustainable management and protection of freshwater resources. The proposed solutions are innovative and as such they automatically bring about a competitive advantage to economy and researchers in the participating countries.
